About

Vicarious Gourmet is so named because this is the way we all learn to cook; through the experiences of others.  Indeed, the very definition of “gourmet” depends on the opinions of thousands – hundreds of thousands, in fact – of people from vast culinary communities around the globe.  Thus, our own concepts of good cooking and gourmet food, while unique and special to each of us individually, are influenced vicariously through numberless people in the world and even throughout history.

I am one man who is enthralled with this global world of food, and I decided to take it to the next level by seeking a professional education.  I submerged myself into the world of all things gourmet by becoming a culinary arts student of a respected university.  Have you ever considered enrolling in a culinary arts program, yourself?  Have you always had a passion for food, but your career took you down a different path?  Have this left you curious about how your life could have been?  Through my blog posts and ebooks (coming soon), you can learn the same lessons and practice the same things as I do in school, but at your own pace.  You can get a sense of the rigors of professional culinary education, and decide for yourself if it’s truly something you want to do.

And who knows.  You may decide that this is for you after all, and end up taking the plunge.  But whether you do or not, my mission is to provide you with the critical techniques, recipes, and other lessons that that you are required to learn at culinary school.

Vicarious Gourmet is authored by Dan Purdon, a long-time foodie and experienced chef.  Dan is currently enrolled in the Culinary Arts program at Utah Valley University.  He is the author of multiple blogs, including www.healthydrinkreviews.com and www.danpurdon.com, and he is a regular contributor to Utah Diner’s Guide.
